10 Video Game Easter Eggs That Went Too Far

5. Nero's Family - Final Fantasy IX

Did you know there's a secret in Final Fantasy IX that took 13 years to discover? If you're wondering how nobody found it sooner, try it yourself. You'll then ask, "Why did anyone do this??"

After arriving at the Tantalus hideout in disc 4, you'll encounter the Nero family members, Zenero and Benero. Because these NPCs have no effect on the plot, you'll assume their dialogue is random filler. (It is, but we'll get to that.)

If you revisit this area after fighting a boss or watching a cutscene, you'll meet Genero, who's waiting for Zenero and Benero to return. When you repeat the process again, you'll be greeted with another Nero family member, asking about the whereabouts of the others. And so on and so on.

Although this sidequest isn't hard once you know what to do, it takes AGES! Once you've performed this action several more times, the final Nero family member will gift you with a Protect Ring.

If you're wondering how this item is different from a regular Protect Ring, it isn't. You can pick this artefact up anywhere. If you are among the few who completed this lengthy quest and didn't burn the game to ash immediately after, you have the patience of a saint.
