This entry in the Danganronpa series originally claimed it would not connect to the previous entries and would instead exist as a standalone game. However, as the chapters and trials progress, this is revealed to be a lie.

This ending is no less shocking for its direct link to V3’s core mechanic and theme of truth versus lies, as the plot transforms into a meta-narrative and commentary. Whilst this entry in the series refrains from integrating the literal Junko Enoshima as the main antagonist, the Ultimate Cosplayer- and current antagonist- Tsumugi- recreates her image and behaviours as accurately as if she were there.

However, the shocking ending emerges from the reveal that everything in the entire Danganronpa series is fictitious, not just in the player’s reality, but the one in which they take place. The game establishes the restriction that Tsumugi can only cosplay as fictional characters from the first chapter of V3.

Therefore, during the final trial and confrontation, as she switches appearance, this is used as evidence that everything the characters and player have experienced was all staged lies.

In retaliation, the surviving characters unravel these truths about Danganronpa before destroying the academy and literally walking out of the death game.
