The little asterisk hanging over Jack Marston is one of the most discussed and debated points in the Red Dead Redemption universe. Red Dead 2 has teased enough to its players for fans to begin amassing their own theories that things are indeed not as simple or straightforward as they seem.

For starters, there's the fact that John left Jack and his mother for a year due to thinking that his 'son' could have very well being the result of Abigail's sex work. In fact, it is spelled out by Dutch that practically everyone in the Van der Linde camp had been with her and that John was only special because he ended up 'putting a ring on her'.

There's also a couple side comments and observations noted over the course of RDR2 that suggest Jack looks 'more like a Williamson or maybe an Escuela' rather than a Marston. A few fans have pointed out that some of his facial features look more like other camp members than they do John, with Javier in particular being singled out amongst the community as the likeliest candidate.

If anything though, this theory actually strengthens John's development as a character. Legitimate or not, by the end of RDR2 he's embraced his family and would sacrifice everything for them, a notion which comes to a head at the end of the first game.
