1. Grand Theft Auto V - Early Beta Testing

Taking place a full year before the real GTA V hit shelves in 2013, this fake GTA Beta from 2012 duped many a wary gamer who just wanted to get a glimpse of what Rockstar were working on next. Back then it was no secret Rockstar had multiple ongoing betas to refine and perfect their latest creation, but if you happened to be following €œGTA V€ on Facebook at the time (which was a fan-made account), their claims that an open beta "You can play today" and "For free!" were just too good to pass up. It was all supported by videos like this, too: http://youtu.be/eewX3uhCNkQ In the end it turned out to be nothing more than a mod for GTA IV, although you can't deny looking at the final product of V, how close these guys came to the overall look of that game's desert sections. GTA V's hype remains unprecedented and wishful thinking filled in the blanks; which was why so many people foolishly entered their prized personal details into the form that promised access to the fake beta, only to have them sold on faster than the debt of three unpaid phone bills.
