10 Video Game Hoaxes That Completely Fooled Everyone

5. Resident Evil - Unlockable Akuma From Street Fighter

This hoax caused a pretty big fuss when it originally surfaced back in 1998. Electronic Gaming Monthly (that mischievous, trickster publication that propagated the Street Fighter Sheng Long hoax) were notorious for their April Fools pranks; here€™s another one that everyone totally fell for. They allegedly posed that Street Fighter€™s Akuma (always the Street Fighter with these guys) could be unlocked as a playable character in Resident Evil 2, complete with a rudimentary move set. Now, everyone remembers having their ass handed neatly back to them by Akuma, he was one of SF's toughest combatants which is why the prospect of playing through RE2 with him as your Leon was irresistible to so many. Electronic Gaming Monthly supposedly printed that players could unlock Akuma by completing Resident Evil 2 six times on both scenarios (twelve times in total), while beating the game with an A grade using only a handgun and a knife each time. It€™s not an impossible mission; just an extremely difficult and time consuming one. That said, many broke themselves over task and continued to do so until the magazine revealed that it was in fact a hilarious hoax.
