4. Kim Kitsuragi’s Mean Side - Disco Elysium

One of the crowning achievements of the stellar Disco Elysium is the relationship between the protagonist, Harry Du Bois, and his partner in crime (solving), Kim Kitsuragi. Harry is a wild and, depending on how you play, entirely unpredictable chaos goblin, whereas Kim is a level-headed, soft-spoken, rational man. The delicate balance of this dynamic duo sells the story, which is why it's so bizarre to learn that it nearly wasn't that way.

During the game's earlier drafts, Kim was not the reverent and kind cop he was in the final product. In fact, he was far more aggressive and confrontational, acting far meaner and often going against his eventual by-the-books style. This was evident in the judgemental way he spoke to Harry and through actions he could perform that the eventual Kim would never even dream of, like drinking on the job or lying on RCM reports.

The switch-up in Kim's character saved not only him but also the game itself. Good job on that one, Robert Kurvitz; it was close.
