10 Video Game Inventions That Were Obviously Going To Kill You

5. The Condenser - Beyond: Two Souls

Atomic Heart
Quantic Dream

Just as a rule, building a machine that can open a portal into any sort of other dimension or universe is a deeply terrible idea, the horrible consequences of which seem so easily foregone.

David Cage's Beyond: Two Souls is no exception to this, as Nathan Dawkins (Willem Dafoe) and Cole Freeman (Kadeem Hardison) - two doctors working for the U.S. Department of Paranormal Activity - build a condenser which opens a portal between the land of the living and the land of the dead, aka the Infraworld.

Dawkins and Freeman want to understandably learn more about what lies beyond, but such curiosity presents an obvious danger: the potential for malevolent entities from the Infraworld to cross over into our own reality.

Near the end of the game, Dawkins decides he wants to merge the two realms together by shutting down the containment field preventing the Infraworld's "residents" from crossing over.

Though his plan is ultimately foiled, the game ends with the suggestion that Pandora's Box has effectively been opened and the Infraworld isn't something that can simply be put back in a bottle. Gee, who could've seen that coming?
