Seeing as the motto of Pokemon is "gotta catch 'em all," it shouldn't come as a surprise that collecting things is a big part of the series.

However, just as some Pokemon are objectively better than others, so are the items you find on your journey. In fact, there's one kind of object that pretty much no one uses, even though each trainer's backpack is overflowing with them: battle items.

Battle items like X Attack and X Defense can be used in battle to temporarily boost the stats of your Pokemon. The buff provide a significant increase in the stat of your choice, but if you've ever touched a Pokemon game in your life, you know that this actually has little practical use.

Because Pokemon's combat is turn-based, you don't want to waste your turn on something that isn't attacking or healing your Pokemon. Using battle items takes precious turns from you, not to mention the benefits it provides can be easily substituted with things like type advantage and the various stat-increasing moves that your Pokemon can learn.

Of course, this still won't stop you from picking up every battle item lying on the ground, but such is the nature of Pokemon players.
