10 Video Game Levels You KNEW Were Going To End Terribly
6. Lewis' Story - What Remains Of Edith Finch (2017)
In What Remains Of Edith Finch, players play as the titular teenager as she returns to her family home. The last surviving member of her family, she makes her way through the strange house to find out how each of her relatives died and uncover the truth behind a family curse.
Presented as fantastical vignettes that merge storytelling with gameplay to magnificent effect, these tales range from captivatingly strange to beautifully tragic, with each being as creative and memorable as the last. Given that each section revolves around a death, players know that these interactive stories aren't going to end well. But none of them carry the same sense of impending doom as Lewis’s story.
Working a tedious job at a cannery, Lewis spends his days getting lost in his vivid imagination while he works. As players monotonously decapitate fish with one analogue stick, the other is used to guide Lewis’s imaginary self through a fantasy kingdom. His imagination gradually takes over the screen as players continue to guide the fish to the machinery.
When Lewis becomes completely lost in their fantasy, it’s only a matter of time before the inevitable happens.
Placing his head in a guillotine to be crowned king, he's decapitated in one of the game's most bittersweet moments.
