10 Video Game Moments That Shouldn't Have Worked But Did
7. Samus Turns Into A Metroid - Metroid Dread
In the Metroid franchise, bounty hunter, Samus Aran, has vowed to sail across the cosmos to eradicate an energy-sapping horde of parasites called the Metroids.
Though she believes she completed her task in the opening of Metroid Dread, she finds herself on a new mission when she's attacked by a demented alien called Raven Beak. This intimidating adversary intends to turn the Metroids into a bioweapon, allowing him to control the galaxy. Of course, the deranged avian's plan should be impossible, since Samus rendered the Metroids extinct.
But during the final confrontation, Raven Beak reveals Samus harbours Metroid DNA, since she was infected by one of the critters in Super Metroid's epilogue. Not only that, the game concludes with Samus awakening her Metroid powers, destroying Raven Beak in the process.
Now, having the hero transform into the very thing they swore to destroy sounds like a desperate and non-sensical way to subvert expectations. (Imagine if Cloud turned into Sephiroth or Sonic turned into Dr. Robotnik to save the day.)
However, this revelation is a nice way to tie the story to arguably the most iconic moment in the franchise. It's also incredibly satisfying to watch the calm and subdued heroine go to town on Raven Beak, beating the hell out of the vile extra-terrestrial with her newfound powers.
