6. Tidus Laughing - Final Fantasy X

The "Tidus laugh" moment in Final Fantasy X is so infamous, many gamers who've never played the game are aware of it. It's easy to see why this sequence has been memed to death, since it's cringey to watch Tidus and Yuna cackling at seemingly nothing.

But within the context, their behaviour makes sense. At this point, Tidus is processing the fact everyone he's ever known is long dead. His companion, Yuna, has her own demons to wrestle with, since she's been tasked with defeating a cosmic monster called Sin, which will likely result in her demise.

Seeing that Tidus is struggling, Yuna encourages him to laugh, even if it's fake. With the world consumed in turmoil, having our heroes fight back by laughing sounds silly.

But that's the point. The odds are so stacked against our heroes, they'll crumble if they accept the hopeless reality of it all. Rather than wallowing in despair. Yuna believes they must find a way to push through.

The scene is corny, but it's crucial for the plot since it's the first time Tidus and Yuna are truly open with one another. It's also touching to see their fake laughter descend into genuine belly-laughs, highlighting they've' finally become comfortable in each other's company.

This interaction also makes the last scene more hard-hitting, since (mild spoilers) things don't end well for the two.
