10 Video Game Moments That Shouldn't Have Worked But Did
5. Delete Your Save File - NieR Automata
At a glance, NieR Automata seems like it's going to be another sci-fi action title set in a post-apocalyptic world. Fortunately, the hack-and-slash RPG is more than it seems since it explores profound themes, including cyclical violence, loss of identity, and the futility of war.
One of the most creative ways Automata delves into these concepts is after Endings E is completed, and players must blast at the end credits in a bullet-hell sequence. If you repeatedly lose, other players will sacrifice their save file to ensure you win. At the end, you'll be asked if you wish to delete your save data, so it can help other players to complete it.
Obviously, the idea that any player would voluntarily erase their save file to help somebody they don't know sounds ludicrous, especially after spending tens of hours on the main campaign.
And yet, it just might be the most beautiful moment in NieR Automata, as it highlights how people are willing to sacrifice their own needs for the sake of others. Though these characters are trapped in an endless cycle of suffering, making this choice demonstrates there's still some good in the world worth fighting for.
