4. Turning GLaDOS Into A Hero - Portal 2

When a character becomes astoundingly popular, it's not unsurprising when they play a bigger role in the sequel. However, the developers need to be wary, since cramming a likeable character down players' throats can compromise the gaming experience.

Looking back, Portal 2 could've run into this problem. Although GLaDOS was a creative and hilarious villain in the first Portal, she exists as a disembodied voice for the most part and doesn't physically appear until the end.

Despite being destroyed during the final showdown, the devious AI was too popular to be left out of Portal 2. Rather than using her sparingly again, GLaDOS is introduced early on and teams up with Chell to defeat the new antagonist, Wheatley. Also, she's a potato this time around.

Obviously, overindulging a beloved character like GLaDOS could've diminished her impact. But by incorporating her into the action, we see GLaDOS's relationship with Chell develop and hear tons of hysterical put-downs. Her fascinating backstory is explored in depth, turning her into a surprisingly tragic figure, so it doesn't seem out of place when she starts seeing her mortal enemy as her only friend.

Even though GLaDOS made Portal's ending deeply entertaining, working alongside the snarky robot in Portal 2 is surprisingly heart-wrenching (especially when she sings that catchy song at the end).
