10 Video Game Movies You Won't Believe Are In Development
4. Super Mario Bros Animated Movie
Mario remains one of gaming’s most influential characters, bringing out new games on a yearly basis across different sub-series. Previously seeing an anime film and multiple animated shows across the 1980s and early 1990s, you’d think Nintendo would do more to branch their star mascot out into other media.
This can be explained however by the major commercial disaster that was the 1993 live-action film and ever since then, Nintendo have remained highly cautious about granting film rights to their IP.
Recent years have indicated a willingness to change this perspective however, evidenced by the 2014 Sony leaks, although those negotiations never went further.
News came out in November 2017 that they were planning to make an animated film with Universal Pictures, in conjunction with the Mario-based theme parks currently in development.
It was then announced two months later that this film would be co-produced by Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, the studio behind Despicable Me.
Talks began as early as 2016 and whilst Nintendo were initially cautious, Miyamoto has since confirmed a good working relationship between the two companies and it's now planned for a 2022 release date.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated the film is “moving along smoothly” and so far, development appears on track to meet this release date.
