5. The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)
The Metal Gear Solid series has some truly exceptional boss battles. But, a bastion of the franchise's brilliance has to be the battle with the appropriately titled The Boss. Not only is it fantastically fun to play, but it tugs at the heartstrings like nothing else.
The Boss is initially presented as the villain in MGS3. As the mentor to the protagonist, Naked Snake, her villainous betrayal of America to support the Soviets is devastating. But, it's nowhere near as devastating as the conclusion to her story.
Ultimately, it turns out that her actions were an elaborate rouse. The American government orchestrated the whole thing, with her death at the hands of the protagonist being part of that. She was a patriot through and through and sacrificed herself and her legacy to protect the world from nuclear war.
Of course, what makes all the more emotional is that you're the one who kills her. As she lies defeated during a cut scene, the camera pans out, and you are the one who pulls the trigger that ends her life. Kojima really cooked with this one.
