It's one of the most common and predictable horror tropes of all time: the villain is rarely actually dead when seemingly vanquished.

Right when it seems the danger has passed, there they are again, lurching into shot. Or their body has mysteriously disappeared, though it was right there on the kitchen lino just a moment ago.

Jack Baker is a wonderful example of this concept. On first encountering him, he is more monstrous for his humanity. Jack is the most immediately aggressive of the Bakers, and the one who haunts Ethan's journey during the early chapters. He's no twisted monster (at first), but, being crucial to the unfolding plot, he cannot be killed during early encounters.

This allows for various encounters, during which Jack can display just how resistant to damage Eveline's ministrations have made him. The encounter in the garage (that poor police officer), which culminates in an impromptu boss battle against Jack and his car, is a particular nerve-jangling highlight.

It isn't until much later that he can actually be dispatched. As series foes go, he may not be as conventionally overpowered as the likes of Nemesis, but he's perhaps even more resilient.
