Super Smash Bros. Ultimate embraces the series’ ethos perfectly. It’s all about powerhouse characters from around the world of Nintendo and beyond, from Mario to Link and from Solid Snake to Bayonetta, battling it out across a wide range of iconic stages. What Ultimate did, though, was broaden the scope even further. Via its DLC, icons like Banjo Kazooie, Final Fantasy VII’s Sephiroth and Kazuya of Tekken fame were thrown into the mix too.

As dramatic cutscenes make clear, though, even assembled hordes of heavyweights such as these can be wiped out by a foe formidable enough. The World of Light begins with the enigmatic Galeem absorbing the strength of his many Master Hands, before unleashing an attack of such force that only a Warp Star-riding Kirby manages to make it clear from. From here, the single-player campaign sees the player slowly proceeding across a wide and varied map, trying to restore those all-star forces that Galeem demolished in a snap.

Dharkon, too, opposes the player (and Galeem itself) throughout the World of Light mode. Between them, these beings wield incredible, unknowable power, and it’s probably only their diametrically opposed natures that prevent them from cooperating and becoming ultimately unstoppable. Really, they both wanted the same thing, but they only wanted it for themselves, their way.
