10 Video Game Openings Designed To Make You Quit
6. The Evil Within 2
The opening of The Evil Within 2 is almost identical to its predecessor: Sebastian enters STEM and is chased by a monster with a chainsaw.
Admittedly, the design of a multi-head yūrei is more terrifying than a grunting Leather Face knock-off, but the chase lacks the original’s adrenaline from being pursued in a madhouse of gore and traps stolen from the Saw franchise. You are also required to tolerate a number of shifting hallways and “ambience” before you even reach the underwhelming, straightforward and anti-climactic runaway sequence.
This alone isn’t enough to make gamers quit, but the added combination of overly-sentimental dialogue and Sebastian’s woeful new voice-actor is. The original’s opening was jarring thanks to its multitude of inspirations, references and mystery, but its follow-up is shocking as the stereotypically rugged detective seems to have somehow transformed into an even more bland protagonist.
An opening that consists of directed chapters, unoriginal chase-sequences and embarrassing moments of emotion isn’t the best approach to captivating impatient consumers, and it’d be unfair to criticise gamers for quitting the title early when Broketober specifically is overfilled with competition and choice.
