10 Video Game Plot Twists That Were OBVIOUS (If You Really Looked)

3. Samus Is A Girl - Metroid

Red Dead Redemption 2
Nintendo

The reveal of Samus's gender at the end of Metroid is one of the most famous moments in gaming. Despite being just a vague collection of pixels, Samus taking off her helmet shook the entire world and helped her solidify her status as a video game icon.

But all this said, Samus's reveal shouldn't have really been such a huge surprise. Her feminine features can be spotted way earlier in the game, though it does take some special knowledge regarding the game's mechanics.

The original Metroid featured a set of special moves that could only be activated by performing hidden combos. One of them, called the Crystal Flash, had the ability to heal massive amounts of damage, but more importantly, it gave the player an opportunity to peek inside Samus's metallic exterior.

The animation that played when the player activated the Crystal Flash showed a glowing orb encompassing Samus's body and then removing her armor. The silhouette inside the orb was clearly feminine, which is why those who knew about this secret mechanic probably weren't that surprised when Samus jumped out of her suit in the ending.

Talk about anticlimactic.
