In the years when the Wii reigned supreme in households around the world, Mario’s greatest rival, Sonic, capitalised on the system’s success with a smattering of new games of his own. One such game was 2010’s Sonic Colors, a fresh take on the series’ otherwise tired gameplay mechanics. Colors added a whole host of new platforming mechanics as well as a plethora of unique abilities to give the Blue Blur some much needed development.

The Nintendo Wii was reaching its twilight years by the time Sega let Sonic Colors out into the wild, and with its release firmly sandwiched between the superb Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the criminally underrated Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, the key to success was to convince players to place their trust in the developer by way of preorders.

To entice the shrinking clientele of Sonic fans towards preemptively pulling the trigger, Sega, instead of any generic in-game extras, bundled in a fetching headdress mimicking Sonic’s iconic spikes.

Unlike Infamous Second Son’s raunchy paraphernalia, this preorder addition wasn’t exactly a practical one, but its comedic potential was limitless.
