The Max Payne trilogy remains one of the most beloved action triptychs in video game history, and while all three games are still sublimely playable, it goes without saying that the first two entries in particular could use a new lick of paint.

The John Woo-inspired noir-action series made its debut in 2001, with Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne releasing in 2003, though the latter's flabbergastingly poor sales led Rockstar to put the series on ice until 2012's barnstorming third game.

Though Max Payne 3 certainly felt like a fitting ending to the series, the first two Max Paynes have been long-requested for the glossy remake treatment, and in 2022, developer Remedy finally confirmed that a remake duology was indeed in development.

With funds being provided by Max Payne rights-holder Rockstar, it's pretty safe to assume that Remedy won't be half-assing it, further evidenced by the fact that they've been quietly plugging away on the remakes and still haven't shown any official footage or images.

However, Remedy confirmed that the remakes had entered "full production" as of last summer, with internal reports indicating that the games will release within the first half of 2026.
