10 Video Game Remasters That Were Utter Failures
2. Final Fantasy VI - Mobile Edition
When Square Enix announced that they were going to be moving one of the greatest RPG’s of all time to mobile devices I alongside many others perked our ears up to pay attention. After all this is without a shadow of a doubt one of the franchises strongest, if not the strongest entry of all, and so with the ability to carry this in my pocket added in why would I NOT want this?
Then the screenshots were released, and it became clear that this wasn’t a direct port, this was a fudged attempt at a remaster. The mechanics were all present and adapted to touch screen, but the graphical “update” was anything but.
At the time of it’s release the SNES classic looked amazing, with love dripping from all the intricate spritework and blocky background. However this was like someone coming along popping the entire thing into Photoshop and smearing all the textures into a blob and then using feathered cutting tools to snip out any extra detail.
Graphics should not overtake gameplay, that’s a mantra that we could all do with remembering, but when things looked this ugly, and you know what it’s MEANT to look like, it’s impossible to separate the two products.
