In Smash Bros Ultimate, fans of Nintendo's iconic fighting game finally got to slip on the signature oversized glove of Master Hand.

Master Hand - a gigantic, perpetually-disembodied glove - has been a series staple since Smash Bros' 1999 debut, and his elevation to playable-character status in 2018 fulfilled a near 20-year longing to play as gaming's most pugnacious hand-warmer.

Unless you glitched your copy of Smash Bros. Melee, that is. Then you scratched that particular itch all the way back in 2001.

We won't go into details of how to unlock Mr. Hand (you can look it up here if you're really interested), but we will note that the experience of playing as him in Melee failed to live up to expectations. Master Hand's slow moveset and gigantic body make him easy pickings for the speedier members of the Smash Bros cast. This means that, despite his final-boss status, anyone who actually plays as him is at a massive disadvantage.

Which might explain why it took Nintendo another 17 years to develop a version of the ivory digit-wiggler that was actually fun to play with.
