10 Video Game Sequels That Fixed NOTHING

2. Paper Mario: Sticker Star

The Paper Mario series could be considered one of the best spin-offs the portly red plumber has ventured into, with The Thousand Year Door long cherished as one of the best RPGs from Nintendo.

After a long five-year absence, fans were after a new game in the series that would meet that standard of quality. Super Paper Mario had been decent on the Wii in 2007, switching gears to place a greater focus on platforming. But for the franchise's debut on the 3DS in 2012, Sticker Star has garnered highly negative reactions from Nintendo's fanbase for how stripped it all felt.

The game relied too heavily on collectable stickers, which governed the game's RPG systems and combat. This random element, mostly comprised of one-use items and power-ups, severely undercut the once stellar design that made the previous titles so engaging.

When the finest aspect of your latest RPG are the graphics as opposed to the depth of the gameplay, you've clearly fallen short of its reputation. It was especially disappointing when this same gameplay template was carried through into the equally tepid Paper Mario: Colour Splash four years later.

Let's hope that the upcoming Paper Mario: The Origami King fares better.
