10 Video Game Sequels That Prove Fans Shouldn't Get What They Want

5. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear going open world? For a linear, story-focused stealth game, that's pretty insane. And yet, not only did the Phantom Pain do that, it nailed it.

For a game series that has never gone open-world before, Metal Gear Solid V absolutely did it justice thanks to its wealth of gameplay options and depth.

Although you could argue that the open-world is mostly empty space, the presence of a connecting world made it so that every single time you had some gameplay experience it was always fulfilling. No other Metal Gear had done anything like this.

In fact, it's when you compare this gameplay decision to the previous Metal Gear games that the differences between them become apparent. Every other game in the series focused on linear, tight experiences, which is a huge contrast to what the Phantom Pain did. It's really only in the quality of gameplay that they compare.

Techincally, Metal Gear Survive could count as a sequel that ditched everything, but that game certainly wasn't successful in doing so.
