It seems like Warhammer 40,000 games are a dime a dozen these days, but sadly good ones aren't anywhere near as common. Thanks to some uninspired design and a paralysing reliance on a Space Marine focus, the Warhammer 40K brand just doesn't seem to be translating into quality in the current market.

A shake-up is needed - heaven knows the space-age lore deserves it - but fortunately an ambitious developer wouldn't have to look too far to find a worthy inspiration. In 2003, THQ released Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior into the ocean of 40K titles.

This time around however, the setup was different. Players took control of a Fire Warrior of the Tau Empire in daring assaults against myriad enemies from the Warhammer universe.

While Fire Warrior was criticised by some for being too gruelling, today it would find itself a place in a market crying out for that challenge. Difficult games are all the rage right now, and the against-all-odds of the Tau struggle is the ideal setup for an FPS that hammers that home on a grand stage.

Don't forget that modern versions of the multiplayer modes would slot nicely into our gaming habits, too!
