10 Video Game Underdogs That Defied All Odds
9. Chris Stone (Freedom Fighters)
Although underdog stories could be told in various formats, nothing beats the tried-and-true version of having a blue collar worker rise up to protect that which he loves. The story of Chris Stone encapsulates that idea perfectly, as he leads an American resistance against an invading Soviet Union.
Outgunned, outmatched, and overrun. This is the basic description of a New York that has been attacked by the Soviet Union, and inevitably becomes overtaken.
Chris Stone, after rescuing activist Isabella with his brother Troy, retreats to the underground, in order to figure out their next move. They begin by starting small, by retaking various Soviet-controlled outposts, and eventually making their way back up to New York.
Even though the Soviet-controlled media labelled him the Freedom Phantom, along with having Troy executed, Chris and the resistance fighters did not quit.
Liberating citizens and fighting back against the Soviet forces truly transformed Chris from a plumber to a hero that simply did not know how to quit. A charisma meter, which was a feature of the game, was exemplary of this attitude, and it increased the chances that further individuals would rise up and face the enemy alongside him.
Although a definite victory was not achieved, and a Soviet retaliation all but certain, Chris Stone illustrated what it meant to rise up to all odds, in the face of an all-powerful, invading force.
