10 Video Game Unlocks Nobody Could Afford

There are a handful of extremely rare and wildly expensive ships within the world of EVE Online. Whereas one user made headlines after their $9,000 Revenant Super Carrier was destroyed in an intense battle in 2013, this was far from the most money someone was willing to spend in this game.

That honour went to YouTuber Scott Manley, who in January 2020 paid $33,000 for the ultra-rare Gold Magnate ship.

Considered to be one of the rarest ships in the game as well as one of the most powerful frigates, this ship was previously only given as a prize to tournament winners at points in the game’s history. And with most of these ships being either destroyed or taken by pirates since then, it's easy to see why the Gold Magnate is worth so much.

Manley managed to get his hands on this desirable item via a special auction, acquiring his coveted prize from another user for 1,001,001 PLEX (EVE’s in-game currency, one million of which costing £32,500 to purchase directly).

While it’s unlikely anyone else will get this ship for that bargain price, the money did go benefit Australian wildfire relief through the developer’s PLEX For Good campaign.
