The Lord of the Penguins begins the game by stealing the Star Rod, the magical artefact that powers the Fountain of Dreams – which, as the name implies, is the source of all good dreams for the people of Dream Land.

Only a bad guy would take this for himself, right?

So, having learned the King has broken the rod into six parts and divided it up amongst his generals, Kirby hunts them down and kills them one by one until the rod is rebuilt.

The first hint that there is something wrong here are the generals themselves – who aren't so much soldiers, but innocent creatures of Dream Land. One is a tree that cries, another a mole that spends the entire boss fight running away from you.

In fact, it turns out the reason King Dedede stole the rod was to keep it from the Nightmare – a maleficent entity bent on spreading nightmares to the people of Dream Land – and Kirby is the one to summon him after straight-up eating the sweet creatures of Dream Land and then returning the Star Rod to the tainted Fountain of Dreams.

Way to go...
