Darkest Dungeon is a title with an especially bleak setting. All of your dungeon-crawling heroes die on a regular daily basis, and every time you think you've done something to fix the situation, the game always throws you a curveball to remind you that there is no hope in the end.

To illustrate it, all you have to do is look at the game's final boss, the Heart Of Darkness.

Darkest Dungeon's main villain and the reason why you throw endless hordes of fresh recruits into deadly catacombs, the Heart is a world-ending threat that your ancestor had awakened in his mad pursuit for power.

Although your goal is to defeat this Eldritch being, when you finally manage to do so, the game reveals to you that "killing" the horror has merely put it in a dormant state.

Moreover, the narrator implies that stopping the creature has come at a great cost because the sacrifices and endless supplies of "meat" you've provided on your quest have made the creature stronger, meaning that when it finally reawakens to torment the world again, putting it back to sleep will be much, much harder.

Well, it turns out prodigious size can dissuade a sharpened blade, after all.
