10 Video Game Villains You Didn't Want To Kill

6. Wheatley - Portal 2

To quote Albus Dumbledore, “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends.”

The lovably dumb Wheatley is your companion throughout the first half of Portal 2. He was actually designed to be an intelligence dampening sphere, that could be attached to GLaDOS in order to inhibit her mental abilities should she ever become particularly intelligent and bloodthirsty.

Wheatley is the first kind character you meet during the perilous opening of Portal 2, and he attempts to rehabilitate your character Chell, who is feeling a little muddled from having been asleep in cryogenic stasis for an inordinate amount of time. You escape the confines of the building together, working as a team to make your way around the facility.

All the while, Wheatley, voiced by British actor and comedian Stephen Merchant, encourages you with jokes and lighthearted optimism.

During your escape, he accidentally revives GLaDOS, and eventually becomes mad with power. Wheatley turns on you and becomes the main villain of the game. The final battle between Chell and Wheatley is as heartbreaking as it is hilarious, but in this world of test or be tested, it was likely for the best that we managed to remove him from such a place of power.
