In the wake of the mega-flop Ishtar, Warren Beatty was desperate for a box office hit, ultimately settling on a long gestating Dick Tracy adaptation. His camp, comedic take on the classic comic strip arrived to mixed reviews but picked up a few Oscars all the same.

Limiting the colour palette to the same shades as artist Chester Gould's work on the character in the 30s, Beatty's artistic approach was carried through into the world of 16-bit consoles.

Many of the aspects film critics deemed silly work like a charm here thanks to Sega's approach to the Genesis rendition of the game. The sharp colour palette mixed with the sheer lunacy of the characters add great depth to a game made famous by its innovative tommy gun feature. Not only did players have to worry about enemies ahead of them, they had to be ready for baddies lurking here, there and everywhere via the doors and windows surrounding them.

A side-scrolling platformer reminiscent of the classic Shinobi series, Dick Tracy wound up becoming a surprisingly top notch bit of gaming for its day.
