10 Video Games Better Than The Movie They're Based On

2. King Kong (PS2, Xbox, GameCube)

Peter Jackson's 2005 update of King Kong was presented as a cinematic event on the level of his Lord of the Rings trilogy. Coming in at a robust 3 hours, the film's spectacle and cutting edge effects just about make up for an often slowed pace and some debatable casting choices.

A long time gamer, Jackson and his team poured their hearts and souls into this exceptional game adaptation. There's so much right with this one that sets it apart from the mostly bad batch of noughties tie-ins.

The call to have 2 protagonists works like a charm with Jack Driscoll's levels playing out as a neat blend of first-person shooter and survival horror. On the other hand, there's mass-destruction, beat-em-up adventures as Kong, punching dinosaurs into next week with the same level of authority he had in the film.

The attention to detail throughout is commendable, particularly the realism surrounding the guns and ammo. The actors returning to voice their characters lends the game an extra bit of authenticity with Jack Black in particular bringing his A-game.

Never a dull moment, the only flaws here are that it's (ironically) a bit short and the ending's a tad abrupt. Otherwise, it remains a gold standard in turning cinema into a great gaming experience.
