10 Video Games Delayed To "Get It Right" (But Still Got It Wrong)

8. Aliens: Colonial Marines

Red Dead 2 PC
SEGA

Aliens: Colonial Marines was a ginormous disappointment, which is a shame considering it could have been so much more.

It was intended to debut in autumn 2012, but didn't arrive until February 2013. It was promised as a truly unique Alien experience in video game format and one that would not be matched.

It was clear to see the developer had taken some notes from the game's cinematic counterparts, but poor design choices and mechanics led to its ruin.

The Alien films evoke dread and terror, two emotions which are particularly difficult to convey in a video game. It is possible, as other titles have proven, but Colonial Marines successfully managed to achieve the opposite, and at no point did the experience compare to other Alien mediums.

This was largely a consequence of poorly scripted AI where the xenomorphs would, as they should, hunt the player but in the end would aimlessly wander, posing no threat whatsoever. The player could not-so-subtly hide in plain sight and still not be grabbed.

Lacklustre set pieces, writing and A.I. stripped Aliens: Colonial Marines of the ability to be scary and as such it failed to deliver any of what was promised.
