10 Video Games Delayed To "Get It Right" (But Still Got It Wrong)

5. Daikatana

Red Dead 2 PC
Ion Storm

Daikatana is one of John Romero's greatest failures and will forever remain in gaming history, but not for the right reasons.

While today mass marketing for high-profile releases is the norm, back in Daikatana's day, this was far from a common practice. Romero had spearheaded the likes of Quake and Doom, which drastically changed the status quo when it came to LAN-based first-person shooter multiplayer titles.

He promised Daikatana would usher in a new age for gaming and it was this promise - alongside it taking three years extra to be developed - that etched it in the video game hall of infamy. It was set for release in 1997, but did not hit the shelves until 2000.

Given the lengthy development cycle and Romero's over-marketing stunts, expectations were extremely high for the project. When it was finally released, it offered none of the revolutionary features people were expecting and came across as outdated, which was something difficult to achieve back then.

The multiplayer was half decent and fun, but the single-player was lacking in more ways than one. For example, the NPCs were burdened with bugs that made them unable to follow the player through tunnels and other paths.
