There was a time when mobile gaming simply constituted of playing Snake on an old Nokia handset for as long as the battery could last. While it was a fun enough way to kill some time, it would be some years until the mobile market would become what it is today.

Enter Doodle Jump, a quirky little mobile game that took the world by storm when it launched in 2009.

This mobile game was as simple as you could get. Players took on the role of a four-legged alien known only as The Doodler. The goal was to bounce on a series of platforms to jump as high as they could while occasionally shooting at enemies. The higher you climbed, the harder the challenge became.

Doodle Jump was accessible to everyone with a smart phone (or Nintendo DS or 3DS, an Xbox 360, or happened across it at an arcade), and its popularity exploded.

What goes up must come down, though. After reaching astronomical heights of success, it was inevitable that this little yellow creature would fall back to earth. Subsequent spin-offs and sequels failed to re-capture the spark of the original, and players simply moved on to the next mobile craze.
