There was a time not so long ago when it was impossible to go anywhere on the internet without coming across ambitious battle royale game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, or PUBG for shot.

Helmed by Brendan Greene (aka PlayerUnknown), PUBG sees a group of up to 100 players dropped into an area and fight it out until only one is left standing. Meanwhile, the arena size is constantly shrinking, confining combatants in an increasingly small area. It's up to players to hunt for equipment and weapons to help them survive.

Despite being an early access game, PUBG quickly became a global sensation. It was a tense and grounded game that tested a player's skill to survive to the end. Being greeted with the message "Winner winner chicken dinner" was the ultimate badge of honour.

However, a truly atrocious console port that was more broken than the alpha build alongside the maligned implementation of loot box microtransactions would lead to the downfall of this game's popularity.

Though the game still has a dedicated playerbase striving to obtain that coveted chicken dinner, PUBG is nevertheless a game that's rarely mentioned. Games like Fortnite and Warzone have consequently filled that battle royale itch that PUBG helped to create.
