9. Battlefield 2042

It sure has been a rough time for fans of military shooters in recent weeks, typefied by the shambolic letdown that was Battlefield 2042.

For starters, many were frustrated that EA decided not to include a story-driven campaign in the game, under the assumption that they preferred to focus their energies on the more lucrative, microtransaction-permitting multiplayer component instead.

Sadly even that fell far short of the expected Battlefield standard, though, with the initial release period beset by glitches, crashes, and major connectivity issues.

Beyond that, fans complained en masse about the removal of classes, the mediocre array of weapons available from the start, and the underwhelming new Hazard Zone mode.

Really it's only the strong graphics, solid gunplay, and entertainingly innovative Portal mode which saved Battlefield 2042 from being a genuine failure.

With the game's player count already being eclipsed by Farming Simulator 22 on PC - a platform where it can be played for a smaller subscription fee on EA Play Pro, no less - its future sure is looking bleak.

If you actually paid a full retail whack for Battlefield 2042, the buyer's remorse sure was real.
