There are few games that everyone wanted to succeed this year more than Biomutant, an open-world action-RPG taking place in a post-apocalyptic world where the player controls a mamallian warrior. Neat.

With its ambitious attempt to deliver a AAA concept on a AA budget, and having spent almost six years in development, Biomutant was an easy game to root for, which made its massively disappointing release that much more crushing.

Playing the game, it's agonisingly clear that developers Experiment 101 bit off more than they could chew, such that despite its colourful world and enjoyable combat, Biomutant is mostly a generic, also-ran action game.

The story is laughably heavy-handed while the campaign missions and side-quests largely consist of the same generic RPG fare we've all played through dozens of times over the years.

As a day-one purchase, Biomutant was a big no-no, yet for anyone intrigued by its charming art-style, it was perhaps worth checking out in a deep, deep sale.

As the game everyone wanted to be an against-the-odds masterpiece, though, it just didn't measure up.
