2. Minecraft
Minecraft takes a very simple concept- hey, building can be fun!- and applies it on a massive scale in an unlimited capacity. Unlike traditional platform games, Minecraft does away with frivolous things such as plot and character development, instead focusing on the act of creation. Whilst the game has some traditional elements, namely a controllable character and achievements, the main focus of the gameplay is on the creation of a 3D generated world, with the only limitations being the cubes provided as building blocks and the imagination of the creator. Having sold over 33 millions copies over a wide variety of platforms, Minecraft has become one of the most successful indie games of all time, and its easy to see why. Its unlimited amount of creative freedom and simple but effortlessly effective world building structure has given players free reign to do as they please, and one quick search online for videos of Minecraft will lead to countless examples of the daunting and tireless work players have put into rendering real and fictional landscapes within its game world.
