10 Video Games That Are Barely Recognisable Today

2. Fallout 1 - Fallout 76

I am a huge fan of the Fallout franchise and praise be to sites like Steam and GOG for letting today's players experience the isometric joys of the original games. Yet when you compare the likes of Fallout 1 to Fallout 76 then it’s clear that the mutations weren’t just limited to the radroaches.

A lot, and I mean A LOT has been said about Fallout 76, from it’s strange choice not to include NPCs at launch, a tonne of bizarre lighting effects that make the world seem lush and less like the irradiated wasteland we know, AND it’s had the gall to include a battle royale mode months after the mode was at its peak of popularity. It’s clear that 76 is a game that is chasing the tails of others in a bid to appease everyone from a studio that’s not entirely sure what made their franchise so successful in the first place.

Hence going back to Fallout one or really anything pre Fallout 3 is something I recommend all players do, as here you get a full on RPG, complete with more choices, side missions and charm than arguably the last few games have combined. To put 76 and 1 side by side is like looking into a strange alternate reality and arguably it’s not a pleasant one to view.
