10 Video Games That Are Barely Recognisable Today
1. Silent Hill 1 - Silent Hills (P.T.)
I really, REALLY wanted to just put a picture of a pachinko machine here and say “well this is where the franchise is today” but I feel there’s more to discuss about the Silent Hill series, and by heck, it deserves more respect than that.
The first 3 games represent something truly unique in the survival horror genre, as they approached things from a perspective outside of Western horror conventions. Enemy designs were layered in meaning and subtext and there was a lot more emphasis on what COULD happen at any moment over trying to throw danger in the audiences face.
And yet, as time went on the cracks begin to show. Desperate to stay relevant the series would often end up feeling like it was emulating others in the industry, and it was clear that for a long while Silent Hill was all mouth and no trousers.
Then P.T. happened.
As I’ve detailed before the shift to first person is a massive shake up to the formula, but here, with the direction of visionaries like Guillmero Del Toro and Hideo Kojima we truly got something so special it could have been groundbreaking had it been given a fair shake.
But alas, the reasons why this series is barely recognisable today is...simply put...because Konami killed it, and in its place? Well I refer you back to the Pachinko machine and sigh very, very loudly.
