10 Video Games That Changed The Gaming Industry In 2018

5. Monster Hunter: World - East Meets West

Japanese game series have always had a place in the western market, but Monster Hunter: World is one a few games recently released (with others including the Yakuza and Persona series) to have really made a space for itself in western gaming circles, without deliberately trying to appeal to a different audience. All these franchises have retained much of their Japanese appeal, but stand out as breakthrough hits on the other side of the world.

Again, that's not to say that traditionally eastern games don't succeed over here, but Monster Hunter: World has gained resounding praise for its refinement of the game's key elements and adapted release schedule, leading to its most profitable release yet. MHW doesn't sacrifice any of its fantastic cultural appeal, instead opening it out to appeal to new players. And it drew in a wealth of fans from across the globe in the process.

It would be amazing to see more games ingrained in other country's cultures (or rather, countries other than the USA) to gain such popularity on this scale, and Monster Hunter: World has truly paved the way for that to happen.
