Whilst many games have brought innovative, positive improvements to the gaming industry this year, there's also been some stinkers thrown in the mix. And, for those of you that played it, Call of Duty's latest installment, Black Ops 4, is one such stinker.

Originally releasing to positive reviews and a healthy dose of fan hype, developers Treyarch decided to wait until the game had been received well before releasing their plan for microtransactions. Fans were not happy.

Eye-wateringly expensive and the only solution to what would otherwise be a soul-destroying grind, the late to the game addition of being able to pay-your-way for the best cosmetic upgrades was met with friction, to say the least.

In a game that's already full priced and that would previously have offered what's in its 'COD Points' inventory for free, it was a move that at the very least got the industry talking about what's acceptable, and what we'll stand for when it comes to rifling through our wallets.

Microtransations have always been a point of contention, but this was something else.
