Most will remember Josef Fares for his er... memorable speech at the Video Game Awards 2017, where he screeched "F*ck the Oscars!" and slammed EA before revealing gameplay for the anticipated release of his latest game, A Way Out, also published by the aforementioned EA. And to be fair to him, that excitement and passion for the industry was distilled straight down into his title in the form of an innovative take on what gaming can be.

A Way Out is a 1970s set prison break game, built on the action-adventure genre and taking plenty of notes from Fares' filmmaking career to make something both uniquely cinematic and enticingly entertaining. It's also a game that has mandatory co-op, something not often found in modern gameplay since the death of local, but this is still one that can be played across an online connection.

This type of story is one that is inextricably linked to there being two players, and shows that experimentation pays off. It's something that will hopefully inspire similar dual narratives in future releases, and has proven this sort of story can be a raging success in the meantime.
