10 Video Games That Fumbled AMAZING Premises
6. Skull And Bones (2024)
One of the main reasons why Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is regarded as being one of the best entries in the franchise is its outstanding naval combat. By setting players loose on the vast open sees in their own upgradable ship, Black Flag let them live out their pirate fantasies as they spent dozens of hours battling and plundering other ships.
Skull And Bones was intended to take these phenomenal mechanics and turn them into their own fully-fledged swashbuckling adventure. After being stuck in development hell for 11 years and facing six delays, however, it became clear that this wasn’t the sea-faring epic that players were hoping for.
While the actual ship combat was still as thrilling as it was before, with tonnes of customisation options available to create a variety of powerful ship builds, everything else about this game sank below the waves.
On top of the bland and far-too-short narrative, the open world was devoid of interesting characters to meet and things to do. Moreover, the lack of endgame content and the mammoth grind required for crafting upgrades quickly sucks the enjoyment from the combat.
With planned updates still to come, there’s still time for Skull And Bones to become shipshape.
