Following in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and the woefully underrated Arkham Origins, Rocksteady had set the bar high for Arkham Knight.

The culmination of the studio's Batman trilogy, the game set players loose in an atmospheric Gotham City where they'd go up against the titular Arkham Knight, an original villain created for the game. Moreover, this was also the first game in the series that let players tear through the city’s grimy streets in the Batmobile.

For the first few hours, Arkham Knight was everything that fans hoped it would be. The plot was engaging, the combat was as satisfying as ever, and the Batmobile was a fun novelty. Unfortunately, the cracks began to show as players progressed through the game.

Although the Arkham Knight initially made for a compelling villain, the signs of who was behind the mask were abundantly clear to anyone familiar with the comics. The lacklustre reveal consequently made for an underwhelming final act that didn't reach the heights of the hero's previous outings. Moreover, the oversaturation of the Batmobile became a particular annoyance, with the sluggish tank combat and forced vehicular puzzles dragging down the action.

While Arkham Knight isn't a bad game, it could have been so much better.
