Since debuting in Halo: Combat Evolved back in 2001, Master Chief has become one of the most iconic video game characters of the 21st century, with Halo being the franchise that put Xbox on the map.

Throughout the following sequels, the Chief was portrayed as an unstoppable force fighting for what was right. However, this seemed like it was about to change in 2015’s Halo 5: Guardians when its marketing campaigns suggested that the fan-favourite protagonist would be going rogue.

To the disappointment of all who played this highly anticipated title, it didn't take long to realise that the advertisements were misleading.

Master Chief wasn’t the anti-hero the trailers implied he'd be. Rather, he went AWOL with his squad to find Cortana, with newcomer Spartan Locke tasked with bringing him back.

But even this enticing conflict was quickly botched when a confrontation between the pair early in the game culminated in an unplayable fist fight before they joined forces to take on a far less interesting antagonist.

There was a lot of potential for the developers to tell a compelling character study that could frame Master Chief in a different light. Unfortunately, they played everything far too safe for Halo 5 to become noteworthy.
