10 Video Games That Ignored PERFECT Endings
6. Doki Doki Literature Club (2017)
If you're a gamer who enjoys happy endings, then it's best you avoid horror like the plague. This genre is absolutely awash with devastating endings that come out of nowhere, with dead protagonists and crushing revelations galore. This is usually fine, given the genre's dark subject matter. But, in the case of Doki Doki Literature Club, the sudden tragedy of its conclusion feels entirely out of place.
This beloved dating simulator-turned-horrorfest ends with you defeating the villainous Monika, who realises the error of her ways and restores the world to what it once was. Gone is the horror as the Literature Club - now minus the self-aware Monika - becomes a safe space once again, much to your delight. That is, until Sayori, the new president of the club, abruptly turns self-aware and obsessive. Monika then returns, deleting the entire game and claiming that "no happiness can be found in it."
While horror often thrives on such bleak endings, it doesn't work here, as it renders Monika's redemption pointless, undermines the charming character of Sayori, and ruins a positive ending that felt genuinely earned. Thankfully, you can counteract this lacklustre ending yourself by getting the True Ending, if you're willing to go back and experience all of the game's content.
