10 Video Games That Ignored PERFECT Endings
4. The Last of Us Part II (2020)
The Last of Us Part II, no matter what your thoughts on it, is a marvel of a game. While many hate it for its subversive story tropes and the unexpected directions it took the characters in, it's an astonishing title that never lets up and lives up to the prestige of the franchise. That said, it definitely could have done with ending a little sooner, especially given that it had the perfect ending.
Ellie's quest for revenge against Abby is a thrilling tale of survival and the cycle of violence, which masterfully plays against your expectations. This comes to a head during Ellie and Abby's first boss encounter, which sees you play as Abby fighting against Ellie. After this subversive fight, the game cuts to a few months later, showing Ellie and Dina raising baby JJ on a farm, and something about it just feels right. That is, until Tommy arrives, giving Ellie Abby's location and once again kickstarting the cycle of violence.
While the final hours, which deliver the ultimate showdown between the vengeful pair, are excellent, there's no denying that the game has overstayed its welcome by that point. Ellie and Dina's peaceful life on the farm could have been the perfect stopping point, and yet the game just kept going.
